HOT SOUP Returns with a Bowlful of Harmony! - TBA
State College, PA
~ ph: (814) 237-3682
Price: $10, & for children 5 & under: Free

Purchase your 2013 First Night State College Button Online!

About First Night® State College Buttons

Presenting First Night® State College requires time, effort, and money. Your First Night®button helps cover some of the costs involved in bringing you a great winter festival.  A button entitles the wearer to general admission to most First Night® performances and workshops. Show your button at one of these locations and we’ll entertain you on a first come, first seated basis.

Single buttons cost $10 and can be found at retail outlets listed here and at First Night®State College information and performance sites. You can also purchase buttons online. Children 5 and under do not need a button, if accompanied by a button-wearing adult.

First Night State College features musical and vaudeville performances in downtown churches and theatres. You can hear jazz, bluegrass, folk, classical, and even bagpipe music from a great lineup of entertainers. You can also take a carriage ride; check out our visiting reindeer (resting after their big night!) or take part in a procession of giant papier mache puppets. At one of First Night’s resolution sculptures, you can declare your resolution for the New Year, or just enjoy the resolutions your friends and neighbors may or may not be keeping. There will be art workshops where youngsters can work on a craft project. For many, the highlight of First Night State College is the 5K Resolution Run, produced in conjunction with the Nittany Valley Running Club. Over 600 participants will run and walk through downtown State College and the Penn State campus—many in costume!

Jennie Avila performs with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra - 7:30pm
Antietam Battlefield,
Sharpsburg, MD

Every year the Maryland Symphony Orchestra (MSO) performs at the Antietam Battlefield to commemorate Independence Day. They have invited Jennie Avila to perform 3 of her original Civil War songs with them this year ~ To Clara Barton, Warrior Spirit, and Breakfast at The Hecks. This is a huge honor! 30,000 people usually attend.
Jennie's  son, Nawi Avila, and violinist, Jay Ansill, are writing the orchestra arrangements. Steve Wright will also be performing on his clay drums.
The concert culminates with the 1812 Overture, cannons and fireworks!

We're having a concert at our house! It will be on Friday, 5/13 at 8pm. House concerts are an opportunity to enjoy great music in someone's home, where the performers are right in front of you and don't have to work a sound system - it's all acoustic. This is also a great venue for kids, and Hot Soup really gets them involved.

Details: Potluck dinner (optional) starts at 6:30
Admission is by donation; suggested donation is $15 per person. That's a Hot deal!
Please RSVP by email so we'll have enough chairs. Looking forward to seeing you.

Ann Mayo Muir with Grammy-Nominated Ensemble Galilei Celebrate The Release of Their New CD ~

Ensemble Galilei, a highly respected Celtic/Early Music/Classical Crossover group, arranged and performs the pieces with Celtic harp, fiddle viola, guitar, percussion and viola da gamba (an early cello-like instrument). Of the CD Grordon Bok writes, "Some pieces feel American, many have a European twist and a couple have run off with the Gypsies...it is a sinuous, snappy, energetic delight of interpretation, with many shifts and surprises, happily suited to Annie's unique vision. With so many tastes and textures, this CD is a feast for the musical gourmet."

With special guest, HOT SOUP!

Come celebrate Ann Mayo  Muir & Ensemble Galilei in a great collaboration! Celtic harp, fiddle, recorder, whistle, oboe, guitar, percussion and viola da gamba (a cello-like instrument) weave together to render Ann's original, instrumental music. Gordon Bok describes it as, "...a feast for the musical gourmet!"

Ann (formerly of the nationally touring folk trio, Bok, Muir & Trickett) will also sing a few of her favorites and Christina will no doubt add a few harmonies!

A homemade dessert reception follows the show.
